personal message

Nyob Zoo! I am Jackie Yang. In short, I am a studious student with compassion for many ideas on social, political, and cultural matters (yet decisive), and thinks outside the class, but not the top and certainly not one who settles for the easiest solution, and eldest sister who must watch my actions, open my arms for their tears and place my hand on their hearts when they pout.

Long: I'm a domestic violence survivor but I still stand strong beating people's perceptions of my weaknesses. In clarification, I do not feel inferior because of my domestic violence experiences. I was oppressed but I am no longer. Just because I went through such an experience doesn't mean my mind must stay the same. I am liberated, and I hope my siblings feel the same way. Now, my mother's strength has made me so proud. She has not remarried, neglect her children like what other Hmong women do just to save their reputation. It is not about how others see your fate but it is about the comfort one must attain, something I've learned through my experience. It doesn't stop here, I'm learning more... I am very mature for my age and it's probably because I am the oldest of seven children. Despite my past, I try my best to give my younger siblings the life I never had growing up. I teach them about Gandhi, his Holiness the Dalai Lama, Aung San Suu Kyi, and everyone I meet day by day. But I don't wish to erase our Hmong heritage and so I must be that Hmong role model to them and advocate Hmong Women's Rights and roles in the Hmong Community, the beautiful shaman religion that most Hmongs are ashamed to admit, the wonderful stories, and chants of grandma, further valuing the clothing of many more wonderful things about my Hmong culture my siblings must never forget. And from this, it shall make them better people with the kindness of Mother. One's Culture and the people around oneself are the elements ignored but very significant requirements for becoming a well-rounded person and respectful of others' differences.

A New Vision

Why do some Hmong young ladies only think about marriage? I have encountered some girls who are just boy-crazy and nothing else. I understand that our elders (kind of) conditioned us to become a "good" Hmong wife such as 1. In my family, only the girls do all the chores. My brothers are not allowed to do any chores. 2. Back when my parents were married, my dad never allowed me to talk back until the last 3 years of their marriage and he disliked some my female cousins who... (continue reading)
