What's up Asian Avenue! I once belonged to this site around 5-6 years ago and just kinda went on to other things in life. Now I'm back, and I'm pretty sure I don't know any of the people in this community anymore, so I'm going to reintroduce myself.

My full name (this is gonna hurt) is Stephen Shiyuan Cody Miyama Lee. You can just call me Shiyuan, cuz I think only my mom knows all the other names I have. : P

I'm an aspiring writer - which some of you will come to find very amusing considering that I am actually dyslexic : P - and I would love for anyone to share their works with me, as I would be happy to provide feedback, critcisms (if asked for) and suggestions. (once again if asked for)

I like a lot of things: music, spirituality, poetry, literature, film, martial arts... but I guess I care most about living your life as it befits who you are. I've never been much of an adherent to any "one true way," including religion.

I firmly believe that everyone has the ability to find their own truths about the world that do not necessarily have to coincide with anyone else's truths, with the exception of those who use that self-truth as a prerogative to force their beliefs upon others.

I believe that conscious rap is beautiful, wondrous and enlightening, while I can also feel the emotional ecstasy in a sublime riff or poetic lyric of a rock song.

I believe that a good piece of writing can change lives, pluck at the soul, but also that a skillful use of the pen can lead to powerful manipulation and a corruption of ideas.

I believe that the spoken word can be an art of expression, but also a hoarse chariot for hatred, deception and bigotry.

I believe that the medium of film can be a magical vehicle by which we are transported into another world beyond our own, yet its use of relativism to our world can sometimes lead to the destruction of the factual truth.

I believe that martial arts is a form of physical poetry, fierce when needed, thoughtful in its training, and liberating for the consciousness and confidence of many. It also can be a home for dogmatic traditions that no longer remember their own humble origins; a vapid and spiritually empty form of self-aggrandizement; and perhaps most dangerous all, a tool of bullies and tyrants who seek only the power to hurt and oppress those they want to victimize.

Lastly, I believe that a single loving god is a grand idea, but more often than not, people tend to focus more on the "one true god" part and less about the "love," even when they claim otherwise. Love is not telling a person they're going to Hell if they don't agree with you. Myself, I find that is perfectly sensible for me to pay my respects and love to the spirits of my ancestors and also believe in a god that likely is shaking its (I'm not much for a gender-specific deity of all humanity, it would be just inefficient) head at the amount of violence, oppression and intolerance it's worshipers claim to be carrying out in its name.

When you have but two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one and a lily with the other.
- Chinese proverb

Now for some music!

Chapter 7 of American Tao

SHADOWS AND LIGHT

Meili Chen lit the incense at her grandfather's shrine. She bowed three times upon her hands and began her usual conversation with him.

"Hey Gong Gong, today was pretty rough. I had another couple of guys come up to me again. I 'discouraged' them in the usual way. And other girls are a pain too; they keep giving me looks and whispering about me. I just wish one of them would just come up to me and punch me instead; that I can understand, not... A CONVERGENCE

Eiko was having a good day. She made her way down the sidewalk with a sublime expression on her face.

Today's the day! I knew that Divya would agree with me on it. Oh my dear wife, my muse, ever providing me with inspiration. And I love the weather! Nice and cool, gives me a reason to wear my new pea-coat.

Her head leapt from good thought to good thought, and when a bad one reared its ugly head, she cut it down with her imaginary... (continue reading)

Poetic Intermission

DISCLAIMER: I am not a poet by any means, I usually do what I'm good at: stories.

NAME

Ten years since the day I said,
"Gonna' call you everyday..."
Sure wish I remembered to pray
For peace of mind on that one-way flight.
A single blink of eyes and the white-
Noise of memories that didn't stay.

Ten years since the day I said,
"I'll always have your name "
Fair trade for a girl's shame,
Wondered what she felt then
When... (continue reading)
