To many the acronym f.o.b. stands for fresh off the boat, a euphemism for immigrants yet to assimilate to their newly reached destination. To many, this phrase implies a sense of ridicule. For some it offers the delusions of acceptance by the standardized non-hyphenated Americans paired with mis-identity and self-loathing. I’ve noticed the growing trend of employing ancient Chinese daoist military treatises as business practices here in the occident (feng shui would be another one, albeit not military in practice). The prime example would be every CEO’s copy of Art of War by the daoist military tactician Sun Zi. Recently I reacquainted with a favourite classic literature of childhood (yes I was once a child), one of the four most celebrated classical literature pieces of china “the journey west” (the other three being romance of the three kingdoms, the outlaws of the marsh, and dream of the red chamber). it is a fantastical tale of adventure, insight, mythology, and redemption. what was intriguing about the reread is the a new level of insight gained.
