Not up to date on my slang...

Posted May 27th, 2009 at 02:03am

Guys,

I'm a hiphop fiend, as you all know.

However, there are many terms/trends that I fail to understand. I suppose I'm just not that cool.
Hopefully, someone among you will be "cool" enough to help out!

1)"A Minute"

This happened to me a few months back.
One of my friends came up to me, after 10 years, and he said "Yo Mike! I ain't seen you in a minute!"
I thought to myself "is this guy retarded? It's been 10 years since I last saw him! Of course, I haven't seen him in a minute!".
Little did I know...the new terminology for"a long time" is "a minute".

Can someone clue me in on what I'm missing here?

2) "Finna" (ex. "I'm finna go to the bar and get some drank and hit the floor"- Mike Jones)
I've been noticing a lot of rappers using the verb "finna", as opposed to "gonna".
As we all know, "gonnna" = going to.
Does "Finna" = FINALLY GOING TO?

3) SWAGGER
–verb (used without object)
1.     to walk or strut with a defiant or insolent air.
2.     to boast or brag noisily.
–verb (used with object)
3.     to bring, drive, force, etc., by blustering.
–noun
4.     swaggering manner, conduct, or walk; ostentatious display of arrogance and conceit.

WHY is, all of a sudden, everybody's using the term "Swagger" or "my swag"? It's not actually a slang term, but since when was it cool to boast about your "swagger"?
I gather that boasting about your skills, cars, chicks, and mansions isn't enough? So, now you have to boast about your arrogant persona?

Or did someone just happen to make a cute song about "swagger" and everyone else decided to follow along and use it (like how the term "bling" came along)?

Somebody help me! I need to be "Hip to the scene!"...well, actually I don't wanna be ...but once in a while, it'd be nice to understand what today's kids are talking about.

HAPPY B-DAY Ennie18!

Posted May 25th, 2009 at 06:42pm

I posted this as a reply on Ennie18's birthday blog and thought that I might share it on my own.

Bare in miund...I had just learned that it is her b-day, so I didn't have time to prepare a good rap, as I had done for PNC.
Even though she's a youngin', I decided to go old-school! No Young Jeezy/FloRida! My fellow ol-skool cats (Trip Da Light, Fusion, PNC, and Peri-M.I.A.) should enjoy this as well!
(slight parody of Run DMC's "Sucker MC's")

19 years ago, a friend of mine
came into the world, for the very first time!
In California, it was quite the scene
cause that lil' kid was Ennie18!

Kid was small, who knew that she might
be stalked 19 years later on this AA site.
Loser after loser, chump after chump,
asianophile pigs, and perverted scum!

But homegirl don't play dat! It ain't her job
to hook up with such no-good-stupid-doorknobs!
So, you best not forget that number "8", son!
Cause without that "8", she would be "Ennie1"

Get it? Ennie1/Anyone?
Happy Birthday, Ennie and don't forget to have fun!
May your wishes come true. Perhaps a date with John Cho?
From your AA friend, BMV fo' sho!

Uhhh!
