The more things change, the more they stay the same

You'd think that newspaper editors would be professional enough not to air out their racist thoughts.

It seems that the new trend is to carry out a racist gesture and then deny it with a "oh, I didn't know that was offensive". This is not far off the Spanish basketball team and Miley Cyrus' "slant-eye" photos. In fact, it's even worse, since it deals with murder.

The New York Post ran the cartoon below, the day after President Obama signed the stimulus bill.

"It seems unthinkable that an editor of a newspaper would not understand the history of Black folks being depicted as monkeys and apes or the recent spate of death threats against President Obama. Worse, when confronted, Post editor Col Allan dismissed people's concerns as baseless." - from colorofchange.org

It's one thing that they ran such a cartoon, but to deny any racist intentions, nor the fact that they even knew the history of black people being depicted as monkeys is even more absurd.

It's 2009 and people need to stop this b-s. If the world is to recover from bigger problems, such as the economic crisis, terrorism, global warming,etc..., people are gonna get out of the "pre-civil rights era"-frame of mind.

das absurd, cuz..

being one of those cats that read the funnies first before the front page and what-not,

I must agree,

this ain't right..

then again, there could be that remote possibility where this was politically appropriate when you do think about that not-so-stimulating bill the house and senate passed, who wrote it, who's behind it, who's REALLY behind it, who's supposed to benefit, who's REALLY gonna benefit, how the ape fits in within that context, and so forth.. that's that side of the coin I'd like to look at, just to give the 'toonist a tad bit benefit of the doubt..

..and though my opinions weigh as much as air in this world wide web, I'm still not condoning it - the monkey and the stimulus bill, I mean

haha

peace

yeah, it could be an honest mistake

But, at the same time, I'm sure they could have chosen another animal, not known for intelligence, if they were mocking his decision, rather than his race.

A newspaper editor should know better than ot use a monkey/ape...and what type of trouble he might experience in doing so.

ty for the reply!
